Tropic Thunder is a highly comedic film that takes every opportunity to poke fun at Hollywood’s film industry. The movie features Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Junior and Jack Black as actors starring in a film that’s about to be shot.
The movie begins with director Damien Cockburn being put under immense pressure to get his filmmaking back on track.
In a bout of desperation, he seeks the help of John Tayback, Vietnam survivor and author of ‘Tropic Thunder’. Tayback advises Cockburn to take his crew out to the jungle to bring out more realistic acting.
Unbeknownst to Stiller’s crew, they’re dropped into a forest with real anti-American forces. Soon, Stiller’s crew realizes they’re no longer just filming a movie. They are fighting for their lives.
The humour is sometimes crass or offensive, but you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t find Tropic Thunder funny. In a combination of brilliant wit and sharp humour, Ben Stiller has created a film that will have you in stitches from beginning to end.
In addition to hilarious wit, the movie also does a great job of poking fun at the Hollywood movie industry. Throughout the whole movie, Robert Downey Junior plays the role of an oblivious award winning actor. He plays his role to the T and is absolutely hilarious to watch.
As part of his role as an actor dedicated to his art, Downey Junior plays the role of an actor who went so far as to surgically change his skin colour to be African American. Throughout the movie he plays the role of a black man. Hilarity from this role ensues.
An unexpected appearance by Tom Cruise steals the show midway through the movie. Although Tom Cruise doesn’t appear on screen for long, every time he shows up Cruise simply steals the screen.
Tom Cruise’s appearance was pure gold every time he showed up on screen. The parts Cruise played were often perhaps the audience’s favourite parts of the movie.
So to sum up, Tropic thunder is a comedy film with a dash of reality designed to poke fun at the Hollywood film industry. Like any good comedy film, the film is sprinkled with regular doses of hilarity and humour. For anyone who wants a good laugh, Tropic Thunder is a great movie to watch. Tom Cruise’s appearance alone makes it well worth it.
